Whale Sighting - Wed 2nd Jun 2010

Number of Whales Seen : 7

Number of sightings on the 2010 Northern migration so far = 402.

Whales sighted off True Blue vessel Explorer: 23 whales, 220 Offshore or Oceanic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), approx 50 Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), 2 Australian Fur Seal. Flocks of Gannets, 20 Black Browed Albatross and plenty of Sea Gulls.

Wayne has reported a total of 12 whales passing by this morning from the Cape Solander whale count station.

True Blue Explorer and her crew spotted a pod of three whales just off the Heads this afternoon. These whales were performing fluke up dives and swimming up close to the vessel. After a short distance the passengers were treated to a breach by one whale and as he came crashing down on the water another pod of 3 were spotted just 1 mile further out. This pod were very active and it was suggested that it may have been a competition pod. 2 bull whales trying to impress the female. With lots of action switiching from side to side and short bursts of tail slapping this pod were very entertaining. A single whale was sighted on the return journey.

Seas were 1- 1.5m SE swell and a 5 knot breeze.

Another sighting in the area: Approx 400 Pilot whales were reported to be at Jarvis Bay today, they may take between 48 & 72 hours to reach our shores.
