Whale Sighting - Wed 21st Jul 2010

Number of Whales Seen : 8

Whales sighted off True Blue vessel Explorer this season: 333 humpback whales, 3 Southern Right, 3 minke, 220 Offshore or Oceanic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), approx 94 Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), 20 Common Dolphins, 3 Australian Fur Seal. Flocks of Gannets, 22 Black Browed Albatross, and plenty of Sea Gulls. 4 Fairy Penguins.

A pod of 3 very large humpbacks were spotted this morning by our South Head spotter just off Macquarie Lighthouse. As the rain squalls passed the passengers were able to cruise alongside these whales for over an hour. Bringing excitement to the group when a fluke up dive was performed displaying their very large tail flukes.

The rains cleared mid morning and the afternoon seas were calm with only 6 knots of SSW breeze blowing.

A pod of 2 were picked up just shortly after leaving the harbour and these were followed for approximately half an hour. Another pod of 3 whales were spotted later on in the cruise and these inquisitive whales popped their head into the Sydney Heads before turning and heading north again.
