The captain reported his first pod this morning just shortly after leaving Sydney Heads.
Another 2 pods were following slowing behind performing graceful fluke up dives and plenty of surface time. The seas were excellent and a slight 5 knot breeze. A single whale was sighted just before entering the Harbour at the end of the morning Journey.
This afternoon a single whale was sighted 2 miles off Macquarie Lighthouse. This whale wasn't performing and another two were spotted further south. As we approached this pod they started breaching with a synchronised double breach shortly after. The thud of their weigh crashing on the water is an adrenalin rush much better than a Red Bull.
Completing the afternoon show with tail lobs and pectoral fins slaps before swimming north on their migratory path. Both Explorer and Kooee passengers were witness to their antics.
These massive creatures are still heading north and as we approach the last week of July we are preparing to see some of the early birds heading south. Our first mother and calf was spotted last week and are on the lookout for these from now on. The little calves are very inquisitive and usually come very close to the vessels.
